Role of researching cultural development

LONG LIVE SEYCHELLES ---A KREOL REPUBLIC!

If you were to ask me, as an anthropologist, what I believe to be the most important asset of Seychelles, I would logically tell you that it is its people and of course its culture.

The Kreol Festival, each year, celebrates the richness and the diversity of the Kreol World.

In an address to the 1995 White House Conference on Travel and Tourism, Garrison Keillor best described cultural tourism  as such:

’We need to think about cultural tourism because really there is no other kind of tourism. It’s what tourism is….People don’t come to America for our airports, people don’t come to America for our hotels, or the recreational facilities….They come for our culture: high culture, low culture, middle culture, right, left, real or imagined---they come here to see America.”

Of the two significant travel trends that will dominate the tourism market  he cited a growing number of visitors becoming special interest travelers who rank the arts, heritage and/or other cultural activities as one of the top five reasons for traveling.

.“Cultural tourism is based on the mosaic of places, traditions, art forms celebrations and experiences that portray this nation and its people, reflecting the character of the United States.

After reading almost three thousand (3000) visitors’ comments on Seychelles, I decided to study some recent official documents I could lay my hands on.

  • ”Seychelles 2017 Strategy”’
  • “Seychelles Eco-Tourism Strategy for the 21st century. I noted well Section 4.4(Cultural Heritage), Vision 21 which states that it seeks to promote Seychelles vibrant and youthful Creole cultural heritage and make it more accessible to visitors.

I read most attentively Section 4.3 on Community-based tourism.

I started to browse the recently published manual for tour guides in Seychelles.

Most visitors to Seychelles normally spend only a few days in Seychelles.  But the Seychellois stay for a lifetime. Even if our environment is seen by visitors as our most important asset we will never be able to maintain it for their enjoyment if we cannot get the people to protect it and culture is the only answer…

Most of the two thousand plus comments in the Visitors’ book are very ‘’positive”… such as…

“Beautiful Beaches….Friendly people….Unusual Scenery…’’

But one visitor suggested the following:

“For future questionnaires it would be good practice to ask if there was anything the guests didn’t like or thought could be improved as this would be appreciated.”
